Abstract

In a world where people use different languages and dialects to communicate locally and globally, language education needs to introduce innovation to advance language learners’ repertoires so that communication across languages, cultures and contexts can be effective. One way to do so is by introducing a plurilingual and pluricultural dimension in the language curriculum to reflect the linguistic and cultural diversity inherent in today’s communicative practices. This chapter highlights the importance of raising language learners’ awareness of their own repertoires to advance plurilingual and pluricultural competence (PPC). The authors discuss plurilingual pedagogical strategies that can be used in the language classroom within an action-oriented approach by introducing a task used in a Mandarin as a Heritage Language program, along with detailed explanation of the steps, to illustrate how language teachers can include a PPC dimension. The authors also discuss how teacher and learner assessment can be designed based on the goals of the task and the adapted CEFR descriptors and provide recommendations for language instructors who wish to design similar tasks for their classes. This chapter will be of interest to language teachers and curriculum designers who are willing to implement change in their curriculum to develop and advance language learners’ PPC.
