Being a Woman in a Male-Dominated Field

Abstract

In this chapter, a group of women neurosurgeons at UCLA detail the challenges and rewards of thriving as women in a male-dominated field such as neurosurgery. This chapter covers the notable women in the field, gives tips to women considering or within the field, and provides an overview of societal norms and gender dynamics. Finally, this chapter details ways to shape the future of neurosurgical training to make it an equitable environment for women as neurosurgical training has its own bias, microaggressions, unequal opportunity, and harassment, but change is on the horizon.
