Abstract
This chapter presents some aspects of the historical development of paleontology in Peru. Emphasis is placed on showing the work of the institutions, dedicated to paleontological research, from the Colony to the Republic. It begins with an excerpt from the contribution of foreign naturalists to research and the creation of geoscientific institutions as a requirement for national development, from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. This chapter ends by presenting the geoethical implications in the current situation of paleontology in Peru. The importance of the protection of paleontological heritage, and some questionable cases that affected the image of paleontological research, are exposed. These include bureaucratic hurdles to investigations and fraud cases.
