Geoethics in Peru

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the experience of 7 years working to promote geoethics in Peru, a mining country by tradition, through the Peruvian Section of the International Association for Promoting Geoethics. The initiatives developed by the Section have provided Peruvian geoscientists with opportunities to promote geoethical values and the geosciences' usefulness in Peru. This chapter discusses the main activities undertaken to support the incorporation of the geoethical promise into national policies for the welfare of society and the protection of the environment; for example, the organization of geoscientific activities with an educational approach; the publication of open letters calling for action on problems that have affected Peruvian society; as well as the promotion of the protection of the national geoheritage. Also, problems encountered during the development of the aforementioned activities, in the search for possible solutions to strengthen a geoethical culture in Peru, are discussed.
