Abstract
Patients are at risk for TE complications during the course of their care particularly those with underlying cardiovascular disease, abnormal coagulation, and undergoing instrumentation. Providers must maintain constant vigilant surveillance for the development of these complications occurring in the extremity and viscera. Suspicions must be further pursued to establish or exclude the occurrence of these complications. Treatment of TE complications must be rapidly employed to prevent significant morbidity and mortality. Treatment may consist of observation, anticoagulation, endovascular therapy, and open repair. Even after treatment, patient can experience significant deleterious sequelae, and persistent observation and supportive care is often required.
