Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are the most common cause of chronic pain in the orofacial region. With prevalence in the general population reported at 10–15%, patients will regularly present to general dental practitioners (GDPs) with symptoms relating to TMDs. Despite their relative commonality, TMDs continue to pose both a diagnostic and management challenge for the general dental practitioner. This article aims to guide clinicians with regards to clinical examination, diagnosis and biopsychosocial management of TMDs within primary care.
