Abstract
Timor-Leste continues to suffer from very high rates of chronic food insecurity and malnutrition despite progress across a range of sectors. This chapter investigates the interlinkages between drought, agriculture and food insecurity in the country. Using the 2015–2016 El Niño as a case study, it illustrates the role of El Niño in amplifying climate risks which significantly contributes to triggering food insecurity. It shows that a critical component of enhancing the country’s readiness to mitigate the risks of food insecurity would be to reinforce the modernization process of the country’s national meteorological service, the National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics (NDMG) to support food security objectives.
