Abstract

Liver and kidneys metabolize almost all drugs. Bioavailability, volume of distribution, plasma clearance, and half-life of drugs are key concepts in renal pharmacology. These pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs are altered in patients with kidney disease. Therefore, adjustment of drug dosage is extremely important in these patients. Drug treatment of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and bone and mineral disease is rather common in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease. Dialysis removes many drugs. Therefore, nephrologists should be familiar with drug metabolism in their patients.
