Abstract
Internet has increasingly become a space for socialisation, where adolescents and children interact with their peers, exchange information and internalise beliefs, rules of behaviour and values. Specifically, social networks contribute to build identity and to the personal and social development of individuals. Various studies have highlighted that social networks are fostering in the teenagers a gender-based development and the interiorisation of a series of rules, roles and stereotypes based on traditional male-female models. Family plays an important role in controlling what children do with technology and deploying strategies to educate them in developing critical thinking is especially important. Achieving this offers adolescents the possibility of gaining the ability, during moments of virtual interaction, to channel and distinguish messages that foster gender-based discrimination from those that encourage new relationship models that advocate freedom, respect and equal opportunities. This paper aims, on one hand, to analyse how social networks are influencing the gender-building process among adolescents. On the other hand, we aim to review the role families must take in the cybersocialisation process of their children, in order to offer a real socio-educational resource: an app for families and their children that will help to build healthy gender identity among adolescents.
