Abstract

Point of care ultrasonography of the cardiac and pulmonary systems aids in rapid diagnosis of significant cardiac and pulmonary complications in the critically ill COVID-19 patient, facilitating early implementation of definitive therapy for a multitude of conditions associated with COVID-19 infection including thromboembolic disease, pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, and myocarditis. Through a protocolized approach to cleaning and disinfection, POCUS has numerous advantages over traditional imaging modalities in this patient population and in resource-limited settings. Cardiac POCUS identifies early ventricular dysfunction, wall motion abnormalities, and aids in intravascular volume assessment. Pulmonary POCUS can identify distinguishing features of ARDS, pneumonia, and congestive heart failure and is a useful adjunct in trending disease progression or resolution.
