Abstract
In this interview, scholar-practitioner Lazlo Pearlman discusses his creative and artistic research and his performance practice. In conversation here, Pearlman describes how his own solo performances react against the trend towards autobiography in LGBTQ+ performances, which he critiques as mostly fostering social understanding for LGBTQ+ people and accommodating them with the broader culture. Aiming to move away from an autobiographical edification narrative, Pearlman pursues intersubjective encounters with others that refuse biographical knowledge and conventional narratives. In doing so, his artistic choices trouble normative conceptions of gender and performance.

Adrian Howells (1962–2014) was a British performer who pioneered intimate and one-to-one performance in the UK and internationally. Taking his cue from participants, he saw performance as a shared act in which he hugged, held or washed the feet of participants.
