Abstract

This chapter provides a detailed overview of viral classification (taxonomy), structure, organization, genetics, reproduction, and pathogenic mechanisms of viruses. The foundational concepts of the virus life cycle are explored along with how this life cycle impacts the host cell and intrinsically leads to disease.

A virus is a piece of bad news wrapped in protein.
