Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic is producing much fear and suffering among the elderly persons. They are constrained to face various challenges regarding the healthcare services, caregivers, financial burden and the overall social networking. The impacts on the elderly women who are widows, living alone in home or institutions, economically disadvantaged and the oldest of the old (80+) are especially severe with the increasing occurrences of neglect and mistreatment. Elderly women who are quarantined or locked down with family members or caregivers are facing higher risks of violence, abuse and neglect. This chapter is based on an empirical study on 60 elderly women in Kolkata. It reveals their social, economic and psychological problems that were found to vary with the elderly women’s living arrangement, interpersonal relationship, communication pattern, social support and social adjustment.
