Abstract
Interdisciplinary education allows universities to give an edge to graduates joining the workforce. However, challenges arise due to strong disciplinary educational traditions, power dynamics, and academic freedom. The goal of this paper is to explore interdisciplinarity within the complex system of higher education and how instructional designers can help with interdisciplinary program design, using complexity theory as a lens and to propose potential ways for establishing positive and collaborative interdisciplinary teaching and learning environment that is responsive to the differences in disciplinary communication and engagement styles.
