Abstract
The simplest compound containing a carbon–carbon double bond is ethylene. Such compounds are called alkenes. In ethylene, a sigma bond between two carbon atoms is formed by using one sp2-orbital from each atom. Besides this sigma bond, one unhybridized p-orbital on each carbon atom overlaps each other sideways producing a new type of bond called π-bond, and the electrons involved in the formation of π-bond are called π-electrons.
