Abstract

Gambling is probably the most challenging behavioral addiction. There are major public health issues for society. Simultaneously there are significant economic gains for entrepreneurs globally. In this section, an attempt is made to address the global ubiquity of this problem. Some of the factors that encourage gambling and ultimately lead to gambling disorder are discussed. The modality in which gambling disorder disproportionately affects the lower socioeconomic class is discussed. “Lottery is the exploitation of the poor” M. Parsa. Risk factors for gambling and ultimately gambling disorder are discussed.

Gambling disorder is a psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent, maladaptive gambling behavior that leads to clinically significant distress. Gambling disorder was reclassified into the “Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders” group of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) (American Psychiatric Association: Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. 5th edn. [Google Scholar]) a first for a behavioral addiction. This recategorization of gambling disorder was primarily based on similarities between this clinical condition and substance use disorders. There is a litany of data suggesting analogous characteristics between substance use disorder and gambling disorder. These include but are not limited to diagnostic criteria, symptomatology, genetic vulnerabilities, high rates of comorbidity, and their association with biological markers and cognitive deficits (Petry et al. J Gambl Stud 30:493–502, 2014, Rash et al. Subst Abuse Rehabil 7:3–13, 2016).

The key issues addressed here include the global impact, potential etiology, risk factors, similarities to substance use disorders, and treatment options.
