Abstract
Internet addiction (IA), also known as problematic internet use (PIU), has been a developing phenomenon in our rapidly developing technologically advanced society. Specific criteria do not yet exist for this phenomenon; however, significant advancements in qualitative and quantitative data are bringing our biopsychosocial evaluation of IA data closer to realization as a diagnosable disorder or behavior. This chapter provides a general overview of IA with discussion of diagnostic nuances, with neurobiological correlates, that are essential in creating an effective treatment plan for patients afflicted with IA. Future directions for research are also discussed.
