Abstract

Substance use disorder is one of the several factors that affect the socioeconomic prospects across the racial and ethnic spectrum. Collection of data across these groups is of vital importance. It is important to understand the prevalence of substance use in these groups and patterns of use considering age and gender. The patterns of use vary depending on setting. For example, the pattern of use across various ethnic and racial groups in high school is quite different from college and general population. It is imperative that these patterns are fully comprehended in order to intervene and successfully reduce substance use disorders. Ideal treatment intervention should consider the ethnic, racial, individual, and cultural milieu among other factors. Both the treatment leadership and patients ought to represent the diverse background of our society.
