Abstract

This chapter develops the membrane and deformation theories of circular domes for various loading conditions such as uniform vertical, horizontal, and pressure loading, assuming the base is unrestrained. The theory for the boundary effects is also developed for fixed and pinned supports. To solve for the effects of boundary conditions, compatibility equations are formulated to solve the base reactions, which, in turn, are used to distribute the stresses in the dome. The membrane and boundary solutions are then superimposed to solve for the stresses, bending moments, and shears at any point in the shell. Theories for loads applied to skylight openings and ring tensions at the base are also developed. The mathematical derivation is fully developed for both membrane and boundary theories.
