Abstract
Austin provides an overview of the Second World War in Central Europe, looking at how the fate of the region influenced all of Europe. With Central Europe coming under both Nazi and Soviet control and occupation, the chapter details resistance and collaboration in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary, including policies towards Jews living in those states. Austin details the development and horrors of the Holocaust and the Final Solution, while also providing examples of Jewish resistance, such as the Warsaw ghetto uprising. The chapter also looks at other victims of this genocide, such as the Roma. It ends with liberation of the region from Nazi rule, and the allied crimes that accompanied the liberation, and concludes with the Soviet Union’s occupation of the region.
