Researching the Revolting: An Introduction to the Handbook

The Handbook of Disgust Research

Abstract

From Darwin at the end of the nineteenth century to the Three-Domain model at the start of the 21st, the scientific study of disgust got off to a slow start. Today, though, we are living through an explosion in the amount of research conducted into this once forgotten emotion. Over the preceding decade 2000+ scholarly papers were published with “disgust” in the title.

This makes the curation of the current handbook, which consolidates the work and insights of international experts in disgust, particularly timely. In this introductory chapter we first chart the history of disgust research from early works on a psychoanalytic disgust for breakfast and disgust in dogs to later studies into modern-day politics and pro-environmental decision-making. Throughout, we identify key events on the timeline from Darwin’s initial observations on disgust to the multiplicity of perspectives we observe today. Second, we introduce the content of the volume, which features a stunning selection of contributors.
