Nerve Injury After Distal Radius, Metacarpal, and Finger Fractures

Peripheral Nerve Issues after Orthopedic Surgery

Abstract

Distal radius, metacarpal, and phalangeal fractures place branches of the median, ulnar, and radial nerves at risk. While distal radius and proximal metacarpal fractures can injure the median and ulnar motor nerves, respectively, surgical approaches for fracture fixation can injure sensory branches of the median, ulnar, and radial nerves. Knowledge of the regional anatomy and careful surgical technique can limit iatrogenic injuries. Early recognition of motor injuries and appropriate treatment can lead to restoration of hand function. Late treatment of motor nerve injuries in the hand can be salvaged with tendon transfers.
