Using Hallyu to Stand Out

Abstract

Most of the young French fans we interviewed discovered the Korean Wave in middle or high school. Their decision to stand out by expressing their passion for a niche culture was very often met with incomprehension or ridicule. And yet, growing up with Hallyu was also a source of support when facing the various challenges of adolescence. These young fans developed new cosmopolitan forms of knowledge, especially linguistic skills. Fans with an immigrant background and relatively little social capital used their skills to develop cultural affiliations in order to counter the racism and prejudice they experience in their everyday life. Some of these fans were quickly driven to have their cosmopolitan competencies recognized and turned to specialized programs of study.
