Abstract

In each family, the coming out process can be understood in different ways. This chapter aims to understand the role of the family of origin in the process of coming out, as well as its consequences for the different members. This is a multiple case study from 8 different families, totaling 24 participants. Interview scripts were used. It was noted that the interviewed families had an important participation in the coming out, constituting one of the main support networks, although in some cases some members did not accept homosexual orientation. Mothers and fathers were more resistant to accepting homosexuality compared to brothers and sisters. It was noticed that each family, in its own way and time, built an intelligibility about coming out, which can promote a progressive process of acceptance.
