Abstract

Renovascular hypertension (RVH) caused by stenosis of the renal artery is an important secondary cause of systemic hypertension (HTN). While relatively uncommon, diagnosis of this etiology is crucial as sequelae, including primary hypertension and ischemic nephropathy, are severe if left untreated. Treatment, whether medical, surgical, or endovascular, varies based on the underlying etiology. The most common differential diagnosis for renal artery stenosis (RAS) causing RVH is atherosclerosis; a less common cause is fibromuscular dysplasia. This chapter provides a reference for key factors involved in evaluating, managing, and treating patients with RVH from both etiologies, along with indications for treatment, contraindications, materials needed, complications, and seminal research on the topic.
