Role of Pathologist in Precision Molecular and Digital Image Analyses

Abstract

Precision cancer diagnosis is aimed at detecting individual cancer associated genetic changes amenable to molecularly targeted treatments. This requires first of all a diagnostic identification of the presence of cancer cells in the biopsy taken from the tumour bearing tissue. It also includes the typing and the subtyping of the tumour cell origin and its grading in terms of its likely behaviour. The cancer specimen is then subjected to in situ (or morpho-molecular) or tissue extraction based molecular analysis (See Part II for information on the extraction method used) to identify qualitative or quantitative protein, RNA and/or DNA related changes potentially associated with the likely prognostic and the predictive behaviour of the cancer before and subsequent to molecularly targeted treatment.
