Abstract

For the purpose of examining our hypothesis, that synchronous learning (SL) and students’ employability are connected in Vietnamese higher education (HE), we sought to obtain Vietnamese English pre-service teachers’ (hereafter referred to as PSTs) beliefs and perceptions of employability capital, given the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. We invited 168 teacher trainees to participate in a questionnaire. They showed positive attitudes towards the development of employability capital (Tomlinson, Educ Train 59:338–352, 2017). Specifically, they capitalized on SL to familiarize themselves with career-related requirements and develop job-related knowledge and teaching skills (human capital). We also found an interconnection between three other forms of capital, that is, their psychological engagement (psychological capital), their relationships (social capital), and their understanding of cultural differences (culture capital). Therefore, it is suggested that SL greatly facilitated PSTs’ employability capital. SL could be used in the future, potentially together with traditional face-to-face instruction, to train both PSTs and other university students.
