Abstract
The French mathematician Marin Mersenne (1588–1648, see Fig. 4.1) studied numbers of the form
where p is a prime. They are named Mersenne numbers after him. If moreover \(2^p-1\) itself is a prime, then it is called a Mersenne prime.
