The Self Who Teaches and Learns: Sharing the Space After a Disaster

Abstract

In 2010 and 2011, Christchurch, New Zealand was rocked by earthquakes that led to 185 deaths and significant damage to buildings. Over 11,000 students from the city’s University of Canterbury created the Student Volunteer Army, which assisted with recovery efforts. To provide those students with an academic opportunity to reflect on their experiences, I, with help, created a service-learning course, CHCH101: Rebuilding Christchurch. In this chapter, I explore how an abiding concept for the course is ako—the Māori term for learning and teaching. Students and teachers in the course are supported to share the teaching and learning space recognizing that we are all learners and teachers.
