Abstract

Integrated care is an approach in which behavioral health is delivered at the same location and in the same mode (“high volume, low touch”) as primary care medicine. This model of care has been widely adopted in the past two decades. Its promise includes increased patient and provider satisfaction, a decrease in medical errors (e.g., failing to detect a mental health disorder), and lower cost. A key component of faithfully mirroring the ecology of primary care medicine, however, is to have a focus on prevention. In primary care medicine, screens, assessments, and interventions (e.g., inoculations) are given in order to prevent or catch physical problems earlier before these fully develop. Unfortunately, in rolling out integrated care, prevention of behavioral health disorders has been relatively neglected. This chapter describes the potential for ineluding behavioral health-focused prevention into the integrated care model. Key challenges and considerations are discussed.
