Abstract

Cardiotocography is nowadays widely used in high-resource countries as a method of assessing fetal oxygenation during late pregnancy and labor. The physiological principles behind antepartum cardiotocography (CTG) are the same as those of intrapartum CTG, as are the main objectives of both, i.e., evaluation of ongoing fetal oxygenation. For these reasons, CTG interpretation is similar in both settings. The International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology updated their CTG interpretation guidelines in 2015 through a large consensus panel. The aim of this chapter is to address the basic principles of antepartum CTG interpretation and to outline the management of normal and abnormal tracings.
