Abstract
The prevalence of obesity has more than tripled in the previous 20 years and it is predicted that one in two people could be obese by 2030. Traditional advice focussing on counting calories and consuming a low fat diet has done nothing to curb the rise in obesity rates. This chapter presents a case for embracing a real food diet by omitting ultra-processed foods, only consuming carbs to tolerance and reducing the frequency of eating. This may conflict with some conventional messages but acknowledging that obesity is a hormonal condition and understanding how these dietary changes will influence levels of key hormones involved in weight management is necessary to address the obesity pandemic. Sustained weight loss can only occur in individuals who are able to reduce lipogenesis and whose hormones facilitate lipolysis.
