Abstract
The United Nations was established to ‘save succeeding generations from the scourge of war’. Limited by great power politics and influenced by some key innovators, the UN’s approach to peacemaking developed as a series of ad hoc responses to pressing issues. It has been subject to the shifting sands of political interests but also to the bitter lessons of lived experience.
