Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had an extremely negative effect on tourism around the world, both due to the imposition of travel restrictions and due to the fact that demand among travellers has been very low. Most countries have imposed travel restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus, so many tourist attractions have been closed and many of the trips that were planned during the pandemic have been cancelled. This paper aims to study how the COVID-19 pandemic affected tourism in Romania and especially in Bucovina. Being considered the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak in Romania, with approximately 4000 epidemiological cases, Bucovina ranks the third nationally in terms of the number of tourist reception structures. The methodology used in this study is quantitative, so in order to find out how tourism in Bucovina was affected, we applied a series of questionnaires to the accommodation structures in the area. Until the outbreak of the virus, in 2019, approximately 700,000 tourists crossed the threshold of Bukovina, but with the pandemic, their number decreased significantly. The study aims to assess the current situation of tourism as well as to propose future possibilities for the development and revitalization of the area.
