Abstract
Remodeling the elements of city life and advancing qualities of cities for learning, innovation, doing business, and creating jobs are crucial qualities for location competitiveness, growth, and investments. This is the dawn of a new era for smart cities, which use information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve citizens’ quality of life, enhance interactions among businesses and citizens, improve government services, increase citizens’ participation, and optimize transportation networks and resource utilization. Key ICT facilitators for smart cities include Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for collecting data as well as artificial intelligence (AI) for deriving insights from data and supporting better decision-making. This chapter deals with smart city problems and solutions as well as technical implementation challenges, and further elaborates on the reference architecture of an integrated IoT platform that can support smart city developments.
