Abstract

Communication is the basis of all social life. Different areas of life each have their own logic of communication: people speak differently within families than in companies or in the public sphere. While the logic of family communication takes place intuitively in smaller family structures, in dynastic business families, it is necessary to create explicit opportunities in which the extended family can still feel itself a family. The formats used are diverse; what they have in common is the revival of the family bond and relationship logic, which can no longer be experienced in families of this size without the business to hold them together. The point of all these measures is to preserve the special resource that offers the business, as a family business, a special competitive advantage: the positive “familiness,” that the family brings to the business. Ensuring this feeling by actively promoting family cohesion is one of the essential tasks of family management.
