Dietary Influences on Blood Pressure

Abstract

High blood pressure (hypertension) is the leading cause of worldwide mortality, affecting ~1.2 billion people. Lifestyle modifications are recommended for those whose blood pressure (BP) exceeds (120/80 mmHg), and nutrition therapy is well established as a very effective approach to achieving reductions in BP. Understanding the relationship between hypertension, insulin resistance, and the blood glucose relationship is critical to achieving these reductions. Further, key dietary patterns that strategically tailor the composition of macronutrients, micronutrients, and minerals may have profound effects on BP. Importantly, other food components such as caffeine and alcohol, and certain dietary supplements, have likewise shown significant effects on BP. While antihypertensive pharmacotherapy is a mainstay of hypertension treatment, behavioral and lifestyle modifications that include specific dietary patterns can play an important role in achieving BP control and prevention of hypertension.
