Role of PET/MR in Squamous Cell Cancer Staging

Hybrid PET/MR Neuroimaging

Abstract

Squamous cell cancer accounts for most head and neck cancers arising from the squamous lining of the upper aerodigestive tract. Staging, nodal spread, treatment, and prognosis vary with the site of origin. Historically, the risk factors include cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption; however, in recent decades, there is an overall increasing incidence of human papillomavirus-related squamous cell cancer that carries a better prognosis and is more responsive to chemoradiation therapy. Imaging plays a very important role in diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, prognostication, and follow-up of these tumors. Head and neck cancer is one of the promising indications for PET/MRI, given the fact that complete evaluation of these tumors usually requires both PET/CT and MRI.
