Abstract

Fires have accompanied mankind since the beginning of history. Fires have destroyed unique buildings (the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, Notre Dame in Paris) as well as whole cities or parts of them. People's efforts to prevent and fight fires are represented in history in various forms such as legal regulations, special fire regulations, and ordinances, and past and ongoing research into the origin and development of fires. Such research monitors the influence of the building materials, construction, and a number of other factors on the origin and development of fires. Individual fires are recorded and various statistics are compiled in order to better understand the origin and development of fire.
