Gender Performance and Irony in Online Presentification: A Study of the Case “Katylene” in Brazil

The Politics of Laughter in the Social Media Age

Abstract

The research presented in this chapter seeks to work at an intersection between sexualities, genres and media technologies. In order to understand how media technologies provide the emergence of a transsexual character in the Brazilian blogosphere, this process is contextualized in the sad transphobic scenario transcended by the character when reaching great popularity. As a methodological choice, a case study based on grounded theory is used to observe different aspects. It is understood that the communication space provided by media technologies—especially, the Internet—are exquisite environments for experimenting with different facets of contemporary identities. Even though the presence of a trans character in the digital humor culture has little impact on the context of prejudice, there are still relevant issues in the observation of the case.
