Abstract

The main objective of this chapter is to introduce the physical principles of lasers and photodetectors, as well as some of their applications. Initially we discuss the optical properties of materials, since they are essential to understand the principles of the devices. We present the classical treatment, that is useful for some basic properties, and then the quantum theory of radiation, that is essential to understand the operation of light emitting diodes, photodetectors, and lasers. These devices are described in a manner that can be grasped by undergraduate students. Semiconductor lasers and some of their applications are presented in more detail.
