Abstract
Cystic lesions of the liver are seen in a multitude of conditions. Congenital simple cysts are asymptomatic in most cases, except when associated with portal hypertension as in polycystic disease, portal fibrosis and Caroli’s disease. Hydatid disease is the commonest cause of parasitic liver disease. Cystic neoplasms of the liver include intrahepatic hemangiomas, mesenchymal hamartomas and teratomas.
Liver abscesses are rarely asymptomatic and present with local and systemic signs of illness, especially in pyogenic and amoebic abscesses. Fungal abscesses may not manifest with fever. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment have resulted in a dramatic reduction of the morbidity and mortality of this condition.
This chapter deals with the surgically relevant aspects of hepatic cysts and liver abscesses.
