Abstract
Collective memory in Chile about the country’s history of human rights abuses is contentious, and as a result, the process of memorializing in Chile has been fraught with political conflict. The conflicting narratives of the past have led to a lack of cohesive policy regarding sites of memory and how memory is taught in schools. There is a need for greater state engagement in memorialization in order to address the deep polarization that persists regarding these subjects, as much of the progress in memorialization has been driven by citizen engagement such as media and pop culture, or survivor-driven sites of memory. In this chapter, the difficulties of memorializing and commemorating in Chile will be explored through an analysis of sites of memory, popular culture and media, and the education system.
