Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of what is known on purging disorder as described in DSM-5. It reports characteristics, prevalence, clinical correlates, comorbidity, treatment, outcome, and mortality of this eating disorder.
About 5–10% of those affected by purging disorder are men, a percentage higher than in anorexia nervosa. Most individuals with purging disorder are of normal body weight and show elevated weight, shape, and eating concerns. Long-term outcome is poor with less than 50% remission.
Purging disorder is a severe and potentially deadly disorder. Considering the long list of medical complications and the high mortality, purging behavior should be a special focus of treatment.
