Abstract
Clinical assessment and imaging have a complimentary role in the assessment of acute head and neck trauma, including facial fractures and penetrating neck injuries. A relevant, targeted history must be obtained, along with a clinical examination which assesses for the potential injury. Imaging encompasses a multimodality approach which primarily involves the use of plain radiographs and CT cross-sectional assessment. Interpretation requires a sound knowledge of complex facial bone and soft tissue neck anatomy, and an understanding of fracture patterns as well as associated soft tissue complications. The management of complex fractures will also rely on the imaging findings, particularly in reference to surgical planning and sequencing.
This chapter provides an overview of skull base, upper, mid and lower facial trauma and penetrating soft tissue neck injuries with examples of clinical, radiograph and CT images and comprehensive management approaches.
