Abstract

Solid-state physics, or the study of carrier movement through a solid, arose due to the discovery of quantum mechanics. Diodes and transistors are thus called solid-state devices, and they are made using elements classified as semiconductors. It is our ability to manipulate these semiconductors that have enabled the creation of integrated circuits. The introduction of basic semiconductor physics is needed to understand the ideas and terminologies that will be used.
