Underground Fiction Translation in People’s Poland, 1976–89

Abstract

This chapter examines the translation of fiction in the so-called ‘second circulation’ or samizdat press in Poland, which flourished in the years 1976–89. By ‘second circulation’ is meant publications which were distributed without the permission of Poland’s Main Office for Control of the Press, Publications and Public Performances, that is the Censorship Office. As alternative gatekeepers, second circulation editors, publishers, and translators played an important role in shaping the literary landscape of late communist Poland. Looby assesses the influence on them of ideology, finding that on the whole underground translators did not manipulate or distort texts to fit a political agenda, although selection criteria undoubtedly were influenced by politics.
