Abstract

This final chapter describes the key contributions of the study and implications for policy and practice. The use of the theory of capital and social practice has enabled an analysis of homeless young people’s (HYP’s) agency. It helped to unveil that HYP’s homelessness was not simply produced through a cause-and-effect phenomenon. Indeed, HYP took informed decisions – they recognised unfavourable conditions within family homes and entered peer groups that provided them with a balance of benefits (i.e. financial, social, and emotional support) and risks (i.e. violence, illegal sex work, and HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)). Based on the findings, I suggest that an integrated approach to health promotion that goes beyond the health sector may help to reduce young people’s risk of homelessness and HIV/STIs.
