Geriatric Hip Fractures

Abstract

The goal of the physician is to effect a good outcome for the patient. The long-standing question is how best to measure, and even define, outcome. Over the past century, clinical investigators have made great progress in assessing and documenting outcomes for geriatric hip fracture patients. In turn, clinicians have used these outcomes for quality improvement in patient care. The goal of this chapter is to describe the evolution of and current methodologies for assessing outcomes, the use of outcome research for quality improvement, and the leadership role of the orthopedic surgeon within outcome research and quality improvement.

Take-Home Points

  • The best available evidence combined with clinical expertise guides treatment of patients who sustain a geriatric hip fracture.

  • A variety of radiographic and clinical outcome measures have been used to understand outcomes for geriatric hip fracture patients.

  • The orthopedic surgeon must understand levels of evidence and interpret evidence in a systematic way in order to make a sound treatment plan.

  • The orthopedic surgeon is the leader of clinical care, which includes outcome assessment and quality improvement.
