An Approach to Adapting Urban Drainage Design to Climate Change: Case of Northern Morocco

Abstract

Intense rainfall can lead to urban flooding because of the inability of Urban Drainage (UD) systems to evacuate runoff water. In addition, the performance of a UD system is limited by the rainfall event that exceeds the capacity of UD structure. However, according to climate projections, extreme rainfall events will be more intense in future, and so the Climate Change (CC) will impact directly the performance of UD structures by increasing the number of floods in urban areas. This study aims to propose an approach to adapting the design criteria of UD to CC in Northern Morocco through the incorporation of two parameters that characterize: (1) the variation in the probability of occurrence of the rainfall events, and (2) the UD operation under extreme events based on the management feedback of the urban catchment.
